The Food Standards and Safety Authority of India (FSSAI) is the supreme administration that is capable of managing and supervising food safety. It is necessary for all the Food Business Operators (FBOs) in order to obtain an FSSAI Central license or Food Licenses. A basic confusion or confusion which is between the FBOs is the license which the businessman is required to obtain. FSSAI sets down science-based criteria for the articles of food and it also improves their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import in order to ensure the availability of safe and also nutritious food to 130 crore citizens of the country. The administration is thus also responsible for creating a data network over the country so that the public, customers, etc. thus receive rapid, reliable, and also specific information about food safety and also sanitation and the related issues of interest.
There are different types of fssai food license.
1. Basic FSSAI License
2. State FSSAI License
3. Central FSSAI License
Basic FSSAI License- To incorporate a food industry in India, it is essential to get certified by a regulatory authority. Also, for viewing and getting a business registered for a category of food product manufacturing, trading, or for doing any food-related business activity it is important to assume what basic registrations and certifications are required for doing such businesses. While the government has fixed other laws for other business units it is difficult for entrepreneurs to understand the basic difference in getting a food license or making an application for food business registration.
Various sizes and structure of business enterprises can make organizers confused about whether they require a license or should opt for registration only like for ex:- Mr. P starts a business of homemade buttermilk, his sales turnover is limited to his location and some small retail houses. Does he require to register himself in government records for creating such business? Does he need to get his final product tested and certified by a government body?
Let us think another situation – Mr. S starts a business of trading chocolate-flavored candies which he shipped from some other country and supplied it to other food agents in various parts of India. Hence, does he need a food license?
In India, all food business whether it is similar to manufacturing, trading, storage or delivery of food products, whether on a little scale or big scale- it is governed by a food licensing act and a food organizing authority naming- ‘Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food businesses) Regulation, 2011‘made under Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
State FSSAI License- FSSAI State License is compulsory for those FBO whose yearly turnover is between Rs. 12 lakhs to 20 crores. Either such food business running without obtaining Food License shall be responsible for the penalty.
FSSAI License includes a 14-digit registration number, which is identified on the packaging of the food products.
Central FSSAI License- The Central FSSAI License is suitable for all the FBOs which are producing their units in different states. They are large-size businesses and are open all over various states or countries like Domino’s, McDonald’s, Subway, etc. These food establishments have a yearly turnover of more than Rs.20 crore. FBOs like the Shippers, 100% trading oriented units, big manufacturers, operators in Central Government agencies are suitable for issuing Central FSSAI License. FBOs working in 2 or more states have to appeal for one Central License for its Registered Head Office and separate license or registration for all branches as per the ability norms relevant to them. The tenure of the central license maximum of 5 years and the minimum is 1 year.
